In Star Wars episode 1 The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi fought Darth Maul at the Royal Palace on Naboo. The duel was long and intense, with Maul being successful in separating the two Jedi. Qui-Gon grew tired and was defeated by Maul with Obi-Wan still separated. Maul was extremely close to defeating Obi-Wan but he managed to fly over Maul and cut him in half. The two halves of his body then fell down a reactor shaft that they were fighting around. We later see him in the animated tv series, star wars the clone, and more recently star wars rebels. This begs the question how did he survive something that should have been so fatal.
When Maul was cut in half and falling down the reactor shaft he experienced his greatest connection to the dark side. He used all his hate and anger to will himself to live and used the force to grab onto an air vent. Maul was then sent tumbling into a garbage container where he lay severely injured until he was transported to a planet known as Lotho Minor in the outer rim. This planet served as a junkyard for the galaxies trash. The trash was used by Maul with the help of the force to construct a six-legged machine that he used to walk with. Whilst on the planet Maul made a deal with a sentient snake called Morley. This deal was to lure prey to Maul and in return, he would receive the leftovers. After years in isolation consuming himself in the dark side with feelings of rage, anger, and pain the sith lord began to go insane becoming a shadow of his former self.
This insanity escalated with the sith lord not even remembering who he was until after 12 years on Lotho Minor his brother Savage Opress tracked him down. Savage took Maul back to his homeworld of Dathomir to be repaired. Mother Talzin used dark side magic to fix Maul’s mind and construct a pair of cybernetic legs. Maul would go on to cause havoc across the galaxy, and would even get revenge against the former Jedi padawan by killing dutchess Satine, who Kenobi held great feelings for.
In the upcoming Star Wars Rebels episode, airing March 19th, it looks as though Maul and Kenobi will fight once again. We know that Obi-Wan will survive for a few more years until the events of a New Hope, so will this finally be the end for the former sith apprentice? I for one cannot wait to find out!
